Think of grit as tiny teeth on the paper. A lower number (like 60) has big, aggressive teeth for heavy material removal. A 220 grit has microscopic teeth. It is smooth enough to remove surface imperfections but just rough enough to give new paint or finishes a good "grip" (adhesion) on the material underneath.
